Questions about installing/buying French doors to replace sliding glass doors?

We have sliding glass doors and I’d like to replace them with french doors.
Here’s where I need help; Can I just buy the doors or do I need the frame? If I buy the doors off of Craigslist, can I buy a frame at Home Depot or do I need to buy the whole unit?
What exactly is entailed in removing the sliding glass door and installing french doors? (How hard is it?)

Any additional information would be great. Thanks
My husband is pretty handy. I just came up with the idea but can’t get a hold of him to find out what he knows about installing them.

This is a big job that the average do it yourselfer could not accomplish. It will be easier to buy the frame than to make one yourself. Getting a frame perfectly square and then hanging doors on the frame would be next to impossible without an experienced person to show you how.

To remove the sliding glass door
1. You need to remove the molding from around the door.
2. You will find screws or hopefully not nails going through the door frame and into the wall. Pull them out.
3. It will be difficult to remove the door in one piece, but easier to demo it with a sledge.

When putting in your french doors in you will put them in place and if you are lucky the frame in your home will be large enough to fit the door. If not call a professional.

If they fit you will need to use shims to level and square the door frame.

Use screw to attach the door.

Cut and place new molding around the doors.
